Civilservants in Imo State yesterday, embarked on a five-day warning strike following the inability of the state government to clear their over three months salary arrears.
This was just as the state government, described the industrial action embarked upon by the workers as a breach of an earlier agreement reached with the various labour leaders in the state that the outstanding salaries would be cleared subject to availability of the bailout fund from the Federal Government.
In a joint statement issued in Owerri yesterday by the state Chairman of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Austin Chilapku, Nigerian Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE)
Chairman, B. I. Onuoha, Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) Chairman, Dr. Hyacinth Emele,and the Trades Union Congress (TUC) Chairman, B. C. Akalazu, directed their members to immediately proceed on strike with immediate effect following the inability of the state government to pay them their three months salary arrears.
Meanwhile, the state Governor, Rochas Okorocha, has condemned the action of the labour leaders, saying that the five-day warning strike by the workers was uncalled for and unjustifiable, especially when the present administration had never owed workers in the state before now.
Okorocha, who spoke through his Senior Special Assistant (Media), Mr. Sam Onwuemeodo, said workers in the state ought to bear with the state government, instead of resorting to strike.
