Thick smoke causes commotion at Lagos airport Badagry expressway
A thick smoke from an electrical spark in one of the panels on the fifth floor of international wing of the Murtala Muhammed Airport in Lagos yesterday threw the airport into confusion with passengers and other users scampering for safety.
Yakubu Dati, spokesperson for the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) however, described the incident to journalists as a “minor smoke” which was contained by the airport management.
The incident happened at about 11:45a.m. and caused panic among passengers, as many ran out of the terminal building.
As at 12 noon, the smoke had permeated the building finding its way to the first floor of the building that serves as departure hall for travelling passengers. Many had difficulties breathing as smoke enveloped the hall when most out-bound travellers were arriving the airport to complete boarding formalities.
Journalists, who rushed to the scene, were able to trace the smoke to an electrical panel on the fifth floor as fire fighters from the FAAN fire department went round the floors to ascertain the immediate cause of the smoke.
A fire tender machine marked P6-03 and a water Hydrant Hilux vehicle with Lagos registration number FKJ 407 AS were parked outside the terminal while the firemen, numbering about 12 searched the building from floor to floor.
