Ologbondiyan and his Chief Press Sec­retary, Paul Mumeh, led a delegation to commiserate with the newspaper over Igwe’s death.

Speaking on the visit, Ologbondiyan recalled how the late Igwe and the former Managing Director/ Editor-in-Chief, Mr. Mike Awoyinya extended the support of The Sun to the Senate President when he newly assumed office in 2007. “I remember how Awoy­infa and the late Igwe stood with the SP when he came into office in 2007 and as­sured him of the support of this newspaper. They did live up to that promise.”

Responding on behalf of The Sun, the Editor, Nation’s Capital, Ikenna Emewu noted that Igwe’s death is “one of the sad realities of life. Since Sat­urday when this thing hap­pened, he has not woken up; that means he’s truly gone. For someone to go jogging, someone who wanted to stay alive and be fit only to end up dead is extremely saddening. “We thank the Senate President for this support in our time of grief. We express our profound grati­tude for the extent of care. This is the second time a government official is sending a team to commis­erate with The Sun.”

In a related develop­ment, Chairman of the Sen­ate Committee on Navy, Chris Anyanwu said Igwe’s death could have been averted if those who ply the streets and highways had exhibited a little more care and consideration.

“He was a journalist’s journalist, one of a kind who with Mike Awoyinfa, rescued Nigeria from the scourge of junk journal­ism. Through Igwe’s jour­ney from the Concord and his defining moment at The Sun, he gave Nigeria a delightful new definition of entertainment journal­ism, with a product that nobody needed to hide to read and which the citi­zens needed to break away from the stories of vio­lence and wars that have become common staple of the opinion media,” Any­anwu said. ........................................................
