PDP plans to truncate democracy –Aregbesola
• INEC, security agents have done well –Akinbade
Governor Rauf Aregbesola of Osun state has declared that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was planning to truncate the nation’s democractic experience through electoral fraud.However, Aregbesola stressed that the “PDP members will have themselves to blame if they scuttle democracy in Nigeria.” Speaking on the conduct of the governorship election in the state, Aregbesola who is the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) stated that the PDP was planning to rig the result of the election.
His words: “You can see the people’s patriotism and commitment to democracy. If they can be 20 per cent committed like the ordinary people, the nation would have been the best for it. What they are doing – by arresting our chieftains and members – is barbaric. They have been arresting, harassing and molesting our people for no just reason. Democracy is about making your choice freely without being hounded. But the reverse is the case today.”
Meanwhile the Labour Party candidate, Alhaji Fatai Akinbade expressed optimism that he would emerge victorious in the end if the process was not disrupted.
However, Akinbade said he was ready to abide by the outcome of the election if the exercise was transparent.
According to his media aide, Mr Kayode Oladeji, the former SSG who voted around 1.33pm in Unit One, Ward 3 in Ogbaagbaa, Ola Oluwa Local Government Area of the state, made this known while chatting with journalists shortly after exercising his civic right.
Commending the INEC officials and security agents, the LP gubernatorial hopeful said: “At least with what we have seen so far, they have done well and this is very reassuring that our democracy is on track.”
He said the country’s democracy was already taking shape, adding that in the nearest future, the nation would become a bastion of hope for the African continent and the world.______________________________________
